Russell Dixon owner The Niche Nursery Thirroul

I met recently with Russell Dixon owner of The Niche Nursery and asked him some questions about his nursey established in Thirroul for over 9 years.

The name Niche Nursery how did it come about? My business caters to the specialist plant market, a niche not covered by other nurseries who tend to buy their stock from the same wholesalers.

Your background? I was educated at Wollongong University – BSc. Biology / Geography; G. Dip.Ed. Over my working career I’ve worked at many different nurseries, spent 4 years at Wollongong Wholesale Nursery as the senior horticulturalist and selling plants at various markets. I also worked at Gardens ‘R Us in Kingsford and an orchid nursery in Port Macquarie for several years. In my early years, I spent some time working at TAFE as a high school teacher

What inspired you to start this business? The business was initiated to improve my quality of life and generate an income independent of employers.

Best describe your business? Retail of plants including many specialist types not readily available from mainstream sources. Local species, bamboo, hardy indoor species, carnivorous plants, succulents, cacti and plenty more.

Summary of services; Advice on plant selection and availability, pests and diseases, growing media etc.

Summary of products sold; All sorts of plants from old favourites, to new forms in the landscape. A particular interest in agaves, vrieseas & species hippeastrums.

Do you live locally? I live in Bulli, and have done so for most of my life.
